I started going to the Wellness Gym at Coventry Sports Centre in August 2006 and it's probably been the best move I have made in a while.  The gym is in the city centre, about five miles from home, so I get the bus there and back.  I work with an instructor who is trained to work with disabled clients and he really knows what he's doing.  I’ve found other gym-goers to be very friendly; I can honestly say that I haven’t had any strange looks or anything so far!

I go twice a week; in one session I work on my lower body for about 30 minutes.  My instructor helps me use ankle weights in different ways and gym balls which I push against with my legs (in different positions depending on which muscle group we want to work on).  In the second session we work on upper body for about 45-60 minutes.  I use the machines a lot and I also use the dumbells although my instructor has to 'guide' my movements as I would clonk myself on the head!  Both sessions I do from my wheelchair.

I have these one-to-one sessions with an instructor at no extra cost - I just pay normal membership..  He's employed by the gym.

I love going and I wish I'd had started years ago.  To be honest I don't think it's made a huge difference ataxia-wise but it certainly helps.  I sure feel less stiff and more alive; it's great to be doing something so positive.

Money matters

  • Being a college student now I have an NUS card.  This entitles me to a whopping 50% off my annual subscription (total annual saving of £150).
  • It’s worth checking out if the Passport to Leisure (PPTL) scheme is running in your area and if you are eligible for it.  PPTL card holders are entitled to good discounts on the cost of a range of leisure activities including many gyms (I have one myself and get a good discount with it).  You may be entitled to a PPTL card if you claim Income Support, Attendance Allowance, Disability Living Allowance, Incapacity Benefit or Industrial Disablement, amongst others.
  • Regarding travel costs, as I claim the Higher Rate of DLA I am entitled to a free bus pass.  The criteria for free bus travel is area-specific – get in touch with your local bus company for more information.
